Lawrence

We're treated to a double dose of bombs, bullets and babes as 2 more sexy action packed Sidaris classics are released on DVD. Enemy Gold (produced by Andy and directed by his son Drew) and the Malibu film that started it all, Malibu Express have gloriously arrived on DVD. Keeping in the tradition of previous Sidaris digital releases, both films are given the gold star treatment for their DVD debut. Sparkling transfers and more extras than you can shake a stick at is what you have to look forward to! Let's dig in and take a look at this most welcomed make your own Sidaris double feature.

In Malibu Express rich boy Cody is a private investigator who does most of his snooping with the ladies (awww yeah, they just can't seem to get enough). Things start to heat up when Cody is hired by a schmoozing contessa (Sybil Danning) to keep an eye on the troublesome Chamberlain family. There is so much weirdness and corruption going on here I don't even know where to begin! Let's just say it partially involves a scheming butler named Shane (who likes to secretly tape his sexual encounters) and the possible sale of computers to the Soviets…aye carumba! Did I mention that Cody lives on a yacht? Yup, you guessed it, The Malibu Express itself. It's lighthearted fun that just may not be appropriate for the whole family! Things get a bit more serious with Enemy Gold (yeah right!) as 3 secret agents (Becky Midnite, Chris Cannon and Mark Austin) are suspended for using excessive force during a secretive drug bust, did I say bust? (Explosive tipped arrows excessive? Nahhhh!). The three opt for a low-key camping trip and a Goonies style hunt for some buried confederate gold during their down time. What they don't know is just who's hot on their trail… gentlemen's club owner (and drug smuggler) Santiago and his right hand woman (Julie Strain, playing a glorious bad ass). With your requisite hot tub scene and lots of tushy rubbing (and a nice branch through the neck, ouch!) Enemy Gold is and example of true Sidaris from sexy start to explosive finish. Good times indeed!

I said it once and I'll say it again, I've never met a Sidaris film I didn't like. Entering into a Sidaris film is kind of like a contractual agreement. You're promised to see certain things (like hot gals brandishing weapons, cool action and shit exploding) and you hope that the promising end will deliver on his word (that's Andy). In the case of Enemy Gold and Malibu Express he does (deliver that is). Gorgeous gals, quite often silly dialogue, always interesting characters and plenty of weapons and explosions. While Enemy Gold remains more true to the Sidaris films that we all may be more familiar with, Malibu Express quite often plays off as being much crazier and sillier than more recent Sidaris films (is that even possible?). Featuring some unexpected wackier than normal comedic relief, I'm pleased to say that it manages to work. Both films deliver on their promises (in spades) and it goes without saying, the price is certainly right.

Both Enemy Gold and Malibu Express are presented in open matte full frame transfers and the result is quite astounding. The trophy has to go to Enemy Gold with really no evidence of print damage and colors that are so vivid they leap of the screen during just about every shower scene. This film looks like it could have been made yesterday. Malibu Express has some age over Enemy Gold and it shows if just a bit. Once again, print damage is minimal but colors tend to be a bit muted. Now, this isn't to say that Malibu Express doesn't look incredible, because it does. However, once compared to Enemy Gold, the difference is evident and worth pointing out. Both films look simply outstanding considering what we have to deal with here. These transfers are quite stellar, it's really as if you're seeing these films for the first time all over again.

Enemy Gold is presented in a stereo surround mix and the result is quite pleasing. Surrounds are minimal but stereo effects are quite effective. Dialogue is crisp and clear with no distortion to speak of. It's also worth pointing out the excellent score that accompanies Enemy Gold, very cool. Malibu Express is presented in a straight stereo mix and while not as effective as the audio track on Enemy Gold, the result is once again, quite pleasing. Audio is mostly clear with evidence of the films low budget creeping in from time to time. I'd blame it on bad acoustics while filming and not the mix created for the DVD. Dialogue is quite clear with a few nice stereo effects. Distortion is virtually non-existent on this track as well, nice job all around on the audio.

Extras? Holy shit are there extras on these DVDs. Both DVDs feature full-length feature audio commentaries with both Andy and Arlene Sidaris. The Enemy Gold commentary is very informative and entertaining. Since Arlene wasn't involved with the production of Malibu Express there really isn't much to say on her end. The Malibu Express commentary plays off as more of an observation commentary than anything else. Still highly entertaining and quite informative as well. Both DVDs feature a still gallery, optional introduction from Andy and Julie Strain (this gal just loves to take off her top) and Bios for Arlene and Andy Sidaris. Also featured on both DVDs is the infamous Andy Sidaris film school in which Andy breaks down both an action scene and a "sexy" scene with raw footage (master and close up shots etc.) and explains how the scene was created. Enemy Gold also features footage from a Julie Strain photo shoot (yup, more nudity fellas), a 10 minute feature that takes us behind the scenes of Malibu Bay Films, a profile on Andy's infamous black Cadillac and a promo of Enemy Gold that was created to boost pre sales. Malibu Express also includes 3 extra featurettes two with Sidaris babes Cynthia Brimahll and Suzi Simpson and the other with 3 time Sidaris collaborator Mr. Universe himself Joe Brown. Last but not least, both DVDs feature trailers for the entire Sidaris line (12 films in all) and a fold out collectable booklet. Whew! It's also worth mentioning once again, the care that went into compiling these extras. Easy navigation, a play all feature (brilliant!) and the ability to watch with or without the introductions. The infamous funky chapter selection is back as well, jump to a scene that includes either bullets, bombs or babes (or any combination of the three) once again simply brilliant! I'm also pleased to say that these two Sidaris selections each feature babes in every chapter but one, noyce!

Two excellent examples of why Andy Sidaris is who he is today have just hit DVD. Fans will be so pleased, you'll probably cream your pants before you even have the cellophane off. First timers, now is as good a time as any to take a look and see what all the fuss is about. You like bullets? You like bombs? You like sexy dames and plenty of them? Most of all, if you like independent filmmakers with a real love of the craft, who make movies because they want to make movies, then you'll prob. dig Sidaris and his flicks. If taken with a grain of salt on your bag of chips, these two flicks can be a hell of a night of entertainment.
